Circle 2 is for the Lustful. Souls here are in a constant whirlwind. These souls gave up reason to follow passion, so they will always be caught up in wind of Hell.
Dante's first encounter is with Minos. He is the Judge of the Dead. He is full of anger and assigns all who stand before him their final place and torment. After the soul confesses, Minos' tail coils. The number of coils represents the level the soul will descend within the circles.
Dante: "They reach the ruin: groaning, tears, laments, And cursing of the power of Heaven. I learned They suffer here who sinned in carnal things-Their reason mastered by desire, suborned."
As Dante looks at the tormented souls, two souls slow in their movement enough to tell their story. They were Francesca and Paolo. They were guilty of the sin of Lust. Paolo was the younger brother of Giovanni, Francesca's husband. When Giovanni learned of the affair, he murdered them both. They are together in this circle but their love did not live beyond death.
