Circle 1, Circle 2, Circle 3, Circle 4, Circle 5, Circle 6, Circle 7, Circle 8, Circle 9

The City of Dis is the capital of Hell. This city marks the limits of Lower Hell. It is guarded by rebellious, hideous angels. Virgil has to pray for Divine help to gain passage to this circle. The Heretics lie in tombs made of iron and that blaze hot from great flames in and around them. The tombs are not covered, but on the Day of Judgement, the lids will be sealed forever on the unbelievers.

Virgil: "These are the arch-heretics of all cults, with all their followers...For more than you would think lie stuffed into these vaults.

The Infernal Furies are three Furies that torment Dante and Virgil while they wait on Divine help to give them entrance to this circle. They threaten to bring Medusa to torment Dante and Virgil.

Medusa represents despair. When she arrives Dante closes his eyes. Virgil covers Dante's eyes to further protect him from Medusa's despair.

The Holy Messenger enters Hell with the power of a great storm to intercede on Dante's part. Nothing in Hell affects the Holy Messenger except that the angel fans away the stench of Hell. The angel touches the gate to the lower circles and it opens easily.
