This is the final circle, it is the coldest place in Hell because this is where all the blood and treachery drain into a lake of ice. This is the residence of Satan. Because treachery lacks warmth and God's love, it is a realm of ice. There are four rings contained here each with its own sinner trapped in various levels of ice.
1) Caina: This ring is reserved for the treacherous to their kin. It is named for Cain who murdered his brother Abel. Sinners here are submerged up to their necks in ice and can only bow their heads.
2) Antenora: This ring is reserved for the treacherous to their country. It is named for Antenor, the Trojan who betrayed his country, according to legend, to the Greeks. These sinners are also buried up to their necks in ice, but they cannot bow their heads.
3) Ptolomea: This ring is for the treacherous to their hosts and guests. It is named for Ptolomaeus who killed his father-in-law at a banquet. These souls are buried so far into the ice that only half of their face shows. Even though these souls cry, it is so cold the tears seal their eyes shut. There is no relief.
4) Judecca: This is the ring for those treacherous to their masters. It is named for Judas Iscariot. These souls are buried under the ice forever. They will never move or speak again.
Satan is trapped in the ice to his waist. He bellows in anger and frustration at being powerless. Satan was removed from his beautiful angel status. He has six eyes, six wings and three faces with three chins. In each mouth, he chews a sinner. Brutus is on one side and Cassius is on the other side. These two sinners betrayed and killed their friend and leader, Julius Caesar. In the center mouth is Judas Iscariot who betrayed Jesus. Satan constantly beats his six wings in order to escape, but the wind they create only succeeds in freezing the ice to an even more solid state around him.
Dante: "Do not ask, Reader how my blood ran cold and my voice choked up with fear. I cannot write it. This is a terror that cannot be told."
Virgil: "Now see the face of Dis! This is the place where you must arm your soul against all dread."
