This the Dark Wood of Errors.It is a representation of Worldliness.Dante represents mankind in this wood.He is about to take an immortal trip even though he is still alive.On his way through the wood, he encounters a leopard that represents lust (lowest division of Hell), a lion that represents pride (middle division of Hell), and a She-wolf that represents greed (the first division of Hell).It is the She-wolf that prevents Dante from climbing Mt. Joy.Dante also meets Virgil, a poet of Ancient Rome.At the Gate of Hell, Dante reads the following inscription:
Through me you enter into the city of woes, Through me you enter into eternal pain, Through me you enter the population of loss. Justice moved my high maker, in power divine, Wisdom supreme, love primal, no things were Before me not eternal; eternal I remain. Abandon all hope, you who enter here.
